[Slag Dump] The slag from the blast furnaces and the nickel smelter arrive via pot cars. The molten slag is poured down into the pit and, after it has cooled, is reclaimed by a Marion 191-M powershovel (made from a modified Lionel kit, Russian T-34 tank tracks and scratchbuilt parts)and removed by IH & Terex 50/80-ton dump trucks.
After awhile, ladles, tundishes and bottle cars have to have their refractory brick removed and replaced. This facility performs this task. The locomotive is a 25-ton GE from GrandtLine. To represent a ladle being dried, a 12v car dome light painted yellow is in the bottom. [Ladle Repair]
[Ferroalloy Warehouse] Steelmaking requires a number of alloys to make different grades of steel. This warehouse stores these special materials, along with refractory brick.
The locomotives used in the mill are serviced and repaired in an old two-stall enginehouse (CC Crow model) with a newer backshop attached. The CRSC DT-20-66 is kitbashed from two Stewart AS-616's. [Loco servicing]
[Corporate Office] The mill is managed from a stone-faced office building kitbashed from a Walthers "Headquarters Building." On the building are the stone letters "Prairie Steel Co." while on the roof is CRSC's name. Out front is an ex-Prairie Steel 0-4-0T steam switcher on display.
