[Walthers BF Part 1] SUPERDETAILING A WALTHERS BLAST FURNACE PART 1: The video shows how to transform a Walthers Blast Furnace kit into a museum-quality model by adding myriad details that don't come with the kit. These include piping, burners, three kinds of gas valves (goggle, hot blast & gate-types), skip hoist details, steps/handrails/walkways and a sloped casthouse floor. Techniques are demonstrated on how to work with Plastruct parts, Evergreen shapes and sheet plastic that can also be used in creating other kinds of models. The presenter is Jeff Borne.

The 86-minute DVD video has an accompanying self-starting CD-ROM, that is like looking through a book on a computer (PC & Mac), with 252 photos of the construction/model work and a parts list. The CD contents can be printed out. $29.95 + Shipping

[Walthers BF Part 2] SUPERDETAILING A WALTHERS BLAST FURNACE PART 2: The second part of the series shows how to convert the Walthers Blast Furnace into specific prototypes, specifically the top works of USS Carrie #7 furnace in Pittsburgh and USS Ensley in Birmingham, Alabama. Three-pass stoves, the type with smokestacks on the top, are made from Walther's stoves and the Walthers Electrostatic Precipitator is highly detailed with the correct piping. Interlake Iron's "Zenith Furnace" merchant iron blast furnace is also created from scratch using a RIX oil storage tank, including three-pass Whitwell stoves and a Walthers stove. Again the presenter is Jeff Borne.

The 95-minute DVD video has an accompanying self-starting CD-ROM, that is like looking at a book on a computer (PC& Mac), with 385 photos, construction instructions on building the models and parts lists for each project in Adobe Acrobat format. The CD contents can be printed out. $29.95 + Shipping

The Next Two Scheduled Modeling Videos:

[Open-Hearth Furnace] BUILDING AN OPEN-HEARTH FURNACE SHOP: The video will show how to build a seven-furnace (5-door) shop. While there is a fair bit of scratchbuilding involved, resin-casting a number of parts speeds the construction.

The components, in addition to the furnaces, include the charging machine, charging boxes/buggies, hot metal pouring spouts, hot metal mixer, charging crane, dolomite thrower, tapping crane, teeming ladles, slag pots, ladle stopper heating furnace, ingot teeming platform, air flow reversing valves, exhaust stacks, stockhouse and rail trackage inside the shop. A Wellman producer gas facility is also constructed. The presenter is Jeff Borne.

The DVD video will include an accompanying CD-ROM with photos of the construction/model work, construction instructions and a parts list. Some of the resin castings will be available separately on limited run basis. $TBA

[Walthers BF Part 3] SUPERDETAILING A WALTHERS BLAST FURNACE PART 3: The final part of the Superdetailing a Walthers Blast Furnace series will focus on the structures needed for blast furnace operations.

First, the production of steam to power the rest of the equipment is constructed. This includes both turn-of-the-20th Century boilers and newer boiler facilities. Next is the power house where both reciprocating steam engines and steam turbine facilities are created. For the blast furnace cold blast supply, facilities, with reciprocating steam engines and steam turbines power the blowers, are built. The piping to the blast furnace is constructed, including the snort valve which is used when the furnace slips. Finally, Walthers ore bridges are modified and detailed.

The DVD video will be about 90 minutes and include a CD with photos, construction instructions and parts list. Some of the resin castings will be available separately on limited run basis. The presenter is Jeff Borne. $TBA

Possible Future Videos:
  • Superdetailing a Walthers Coke Oven
  • Superdetailing a Walthers Electric Furnace
  • Building a Q-BOP Steel Furnace Shop
  • Building a Hulett Unloader and Car Dumper
  • Building a Continuous Caster/Hot Strip Rolling Mill
  • Building a Scrap Processor with Shredder
